A Brief Introduction to China Research Society of Urban Development
China Research Society of Urban Development (CRSUD), directly-under Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, is a national social institution centering on conducting research on urban economy, social and ecological development issues, and aiming at providing services for urban reform, opening-up, construction and management.
Under joint initiatives of mayors of Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Guanghzou, Chongqing, Taiyuan and Shenzhen, and famous economists including Xu Dixin, Liu Guoguang and Sun Shangqing, China Research Society of Urban Development was established in 1984 with approval of Wan Li, Vice Premier of State Council at that time. Comrade Wan Li also personally attended the founding ceremony grandly held at Great Hall of The People in December 1984 and addressed an important speech. On the Third Session of the Congress of CRSUD held in Xi’an in June 1994, Comrade Wan Li again expressed his compliments to the work done and showed high expectation to the future of CRSUD. When the Fourth Session of the Congress of CRSUD was held in Shenzhen in June 2000, Li Ruihuan, permanent member of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee and Chairman of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Wan Li, former Chairman of the Standing Committee of NPC, Li Tieying, member of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee and President of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Wang Guangying, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of NPC, Huo Yingdong and Ma Wanqi, Vice Chairman of CPPCC all expressed their compliments and directed its work before and in the new century. In June 2005, CRSUD grandly held its Fifth Session of the Congress in Hangzhou to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Founding of CRSUD. On the session, the Fifth Council was selected. Li Tieying, Vice Chairman of Standing Committee of NPC was selected General Counsel, leaders including Yu Guangyuan, Ma Hong, Wang Qishan, Wang Maolin, Wang Mengkui, Wang Hongju, Li Xueju, Li Chengrui, Zhang Dejiang, Wang Guangtao, Xu Kuangdi, Han Zheng, Tong Dalin, Dai Xianglong, Wei Liqun were selected counsels, and Huo Yingdong, Ma Wanqi, Zhuang Shiping and Yu Pengnian were selected counsels for Hong Kong and Macao. Liu Guoguang, a famous economist and Special Counsel of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Li Youwei, permanent member of Standing Committee of CPPCC and Vice Director of Commission of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Emigrants, were selected Honorary Director-General. Besides, Cheng Andong, permanent member of Standing Committee of CPPCC, Vice Director of Commission of Economy, former Governor of Shaanxi Province, was selected new Director-General.
Since the founding of the society, CRSUD has made remarkable achievements in accomplishing comprehensive research work on urban development, enhancing exchange and link between cities, expanding cooperation between cities both home and abroad, promoting coordination and collaboration between city servants and related experts and scholars to explore the universal rule in urban development, and to conduct joint research on new problems in urban reform and opening-up, economic and social development and urban construction and administration. Moreover, the society also organized friendly exchange activities between cities home and abroad, so as to learn advanced experience from other countries. All these efforts were highly evaluated by public and various cities and contributed a lot to the construction of urban modernization drive with Chinese characteristics.
Currently, CRSUD now holds over 500 member cities. According to the memorandum, the current mayors of these cities are taking the post of Director or Managing Director of CRSUD. Another about 100 famous experts and scholars were invited to directorship.
Permanent bodies, administrative bodies and branches of CRSUD include: Secretariat, Academic Commission, Liaison Department, Research and Consultation Department, Business Development Department, Training Department, Urban Institute, Network Center, Press of The Yearbook of China’s Cities, Editorial Department of Mayor’s Reference, Urban Development Committee of Medium and Small-sized Cities and Urban Fine Arts Development Committee. The Yearbook of China’s Cities (Chinese and English version), and Mayor’s Reference (monthly) are sponsored publications of CRSUD.
